Grade 5MM students have studied composition and and investigated still life artists such as Cezanne and Van Gogh. They learned that still life art gives the artist control over his/her subject and allows the artist to refine and practise skills for a long time because the objects don't move.
They brought items to school that they wanted to sketch. Here are some sketches after our first drawing lesson, before we used value finders:
