Grade 2 Printmaking

Wow! Another year is almost over! To celebrate all of our growth and learning we are creating a collaborative project together. Each student is designing their own plate with a portrait of themselves. We are making individual prints and creating multiple cards. We are also putting the prints together to create a special class project (shhhhh... It's a surprise).

Here we are making the plates:

Assessing Growth in Drawing

How can I draw what I see?

  • Look for Contour Families: line, curve, angle, circle and dot.
  • Air draw
  • 'Imagine draw' when you need to overlap
  • Look closely... even when you think you're done!

At the beginning of the year, each student at GWA from Grades KG2-Grade 5 was asked to do their best drawing in 10 minutes. They had to draw a of a pot of art supplies. They reflected on their work and set goals for how they would improve in drawing this year.

Here are some of the drawings and reflections from Grade 3:

And very focused Grade 4s:

Art Games

These art games are a great way to encourage problem solving, collaboration and creativity! Ask your child to teach you how to play!

The never ending line:

The line shape game

How can forces help us create art?

Grade 2 students explored how force can help us draw. They created very light lines and dark lines by varying the amount of force they used when drawing.

Their observational drawings included thick dark lines made with a lot of force and thin light lines made with a little force.

When done, we turned on our imaginations and transformed the machines into characters with google eyes! What fun!

A Journey Back in Time

Students in Grade 2 journeyed back through time to see the art of the ancient people of the Lascaux caves in this video:   Lascaux Cave: Virtual Tour

They created their own art with coloured chalk and guessed why the cave people made art with their hands and painted animals. This is what they thought...

Cave people made art to...

  • to tell a story.
  • to have fun! Maybe they got bored of catching animals so they made art.
  • so people would remember who they were and that they lived there.
  • to  share feelings.
  • because they respected animals.
  • to show where they've been.
  • to show how much they've hunted and eaten.
  • to explain what they did and how was their life.
  • to communicate to others.
  • so we can see how they lived in the past.
  • to show what animals lived there.
  • to collaborate and be friends.
  • to communicate
  • to show the number of people who stayed in the cave.
  • They used colours to express their feelings.
  • to respect others feelings.
  • because drawing makes you feel happy.
or
  •  maybe they threw real arrows at the animals to pretend to hunt them.
  • maybe they think that when they die, their paintings will come to life.

Grade 2 smART centres

Grade 2 artists are exploring more mediums this cycle (scrap paper, paint, buttons...) and thinking about how they can create new ideas for their art. There are so many unique projects happening this week!

KG2-Grade 2 Celebration of Art

Tuesday’s KG2 – Grade 2 Celebration of Arts showcased the talents of our students with a beautiful morning of music and art. Thank you to those who came out to watch! Each student’s work was displayed in the art show. In addition there were 16 collaborative artworks for auction, all made by our KG2-Grade 2 students. We have raised a total of 11.555 AED from the auctioned art to donate to support the Philippines! Thank you for your generous support!

Click on the video above to watch and share the Grade 2 slide show that was shown at the event. You can watch the entire event on the GWA Weeebly.

Grade 2 National Day Batiks

The Grade 2 students reflected on what they love about Dubai and the UAE int his batik.  They are so excited to see how the batik has changed after painting and washing it!
