National Day in the Art Room

As we wandered around the school on National Day, there were many beautiful patterns and lines on the tapestries, abayas and traditional decorations. In the art room, we went on a hunt for lines and patterns too.
Meet the line detectives!

Everyone's was so different!
 Happy National Day!

Joan Miro Inspired Art

Share your reflections and view what other students have to say on Wallwisher!

After viewing some of Miro's art this week, Grade three classes were very excited to discover an artist that was so fun and intriguing! They loved that he used many kinds of geometric and organic shapes and many kinds of lines in his work. They noticed many other things about his work too. We did a visible thinking routine, See, Think, Wonder when we viewed The Garden. Below is an animated version of the original painting and some of the students thoughts:

  • Black lines that make the bird stand out.' -They learned that it's called emphasis when an artist makes something stand out.
  • 'I see some of the shapes and colours in The Garden repeated' -This made their eyes look all around the painting. They decided that they would use repetition in their work too.
  • 'I see overlapping shapes.' -They were fun to make. Each time two shapes overlapped, they made a new one.
  • 'I wonder why he paints like this.' - Students thought he might have done this painting when he was just very young because they had learned that he was 7 when he started making art. They were surprised to find out that he was an adult when he painted it. Students loved how all of his paintings made them so curious. They had many ideas about what the symbols might mean!
Here are some picture of the students Joan Miro inspired creations. We will choose our favorite parts and create a final piece of art next week.

Line or Shape?

Grade 3 learned the difference in a shape and a line this week. We used our bodies to make lots of lines. Some classes even broke out into a line dance! There was the peaceful-wavy-line dance and the energetic-zig-zag-line dance! What fun! In the end we took the start of a line and joined it to the end of the line and made a SHAPE!

A line has a start and an end point.

When we join them together we make a shape.

Here are some pictures of students completing a pipe cleaner challenge: Each student had to create new things with the organic shape that they made from a pipecleaner: Look at the creative responses!

Gustav Klimt's Tree of Life

What better way to review the ELEMENTS OF ART than to use them to make our own art! We looked at Gustav Klimt’s “Tree of Life” and noticed the tree’s spiralling lines, patterns, texture and shapes.
After a lesson on painting techniques, Grade 4 students went away to create their own tree. We noticed how the lines made our eyes move all over the page! Students learned how to make movement in their work.

Lines: Inspired by Vashti

Grade 3 are reading The Dot by Peter H Reynolds in class this week. Like the  main character, Vashti, we are exploring. Here the students are investigating their first element of art: line. They are making as many different kinds of lines as they can with paint and drawing tools. Students gave their lines names and shared with each other. We also explored Line in the Artist's Toolkit. Look for it in the 'Get Inspired' section on the left side of the blog.

Portraits in Ink

Grade 4 students are so proud of their expressive ink portraits! They have finished their self-portraits in 2 different ways. Mrs Murphy photocopied the original sketch as an outline for the ink pen portraits (and we used water colour paints for the original).

Students created contrast in their work. Many students chose to make either the background dark and the hair light or the hair dark and the background light. Students found many other creative ways to use contrast too!

Many lines and patterns were used to create texture in these portraits.

Can you tell what feelings and ideas were expressed by looking at the expression, patterns, clothing and symbols in the portraits below?

Be sure to stop by the library this week and have a look at the beautiful display of Grade 4 work.

Landscapes of Dubai

Grade examined the lines and shapes in the Urban landscape of Dubai. We have been completing sketches and drawings in a variety of mediums such as pencil, oil and chalk pastel and marker. Below are some of our interpretations of what we think Dubai will look like in 5 years!

Matisse Collage

Students in Grade 4 classes studied Matisse's collages. We learned about composition when we made a class collage. Later, we used his style to make covers for our Art books. We also learned how to cut letters from paper and to overlap shapes and lines.

Dubai in 5 Years

Grade 3 s are currently investigating urban communities in their unit of inquiry. In art we are looking at the buildings in Dubai. Here we are drawing buildings that we see in Dubai and buildings that we imagine may be built in the future! We are using a new medium: oil pastels and chalk pastels to colour them in. Here is what 3JH completed in our first class. We will post the finished products when they are done!
