Grade 5

Grade 5 students are completing a ceramics unit. Here are some of the products that they completed -using creativity and skill!

Grade 3-5 Celebration of Arts

Grade 3 Artists 2013-2014

Assessing Growth in Drawing

How can I draw what I see?

  • Look for Contour Families: line, curve, angle, circle and dot.
  • Air draw
  • 'Imagine draw' when you need to overlap
  • Look closely... even when you think you're done!

At the beginning of the year, each student at GWA from Grades KG2-Grade 5 was asked to do their best drawing in 10 minutes. They had to draw a of a pot of art supplies. They reflected on their work and set goals for how they would improve in drawing this year.

Here are some of the drawings and reflections from Grade 3:

And very focused Grade 4s:

Help With A Collaborative Art Project

Grade 5 was inspired by recycled art that they saw at the Change Innitiave when they visited for a field trip. They returned to school and designed their own artwork, titled, "Why?", asking people to consider their use of trash. It will be made from collected plastic. Now all they need is your help!

Please save any small coloured pieces of plastic such as old plastic toys, Lego, small coloured plastic from packaging or bottle caps that you were going to throw out and bring them to us!

We are also looking for old newspapers, plastic grocery bags and yogurt tubs to reuse in the art room.

Please bring any donations to C-202. Thank you!

Still Life Drawing

Grade 5MM students have studied composition and and investigated still life artists such as Cezanne and Van Gogh. They learned that still life art gives the artist control over his/her subject and allows the artist to refine and practise skills for a long time because the objects don't move.

They brought items to school that they wanted to sketch. Here are some sketches after our first drawing lesson, before we used value finders:

After using our value finders to help us create a variety of shadows and highlights this is what they created....

Everyone was truly amazed at what they could create when they stuck with their drawing. Great work 5MM!

Grade 5 Ceramic Spoons

Grade 5 students got into form (the element of art) during this unit. After reading a picture book, Spoon by Amy Krouse Rosenthal,  students explored the theme of personal uniqueness and perspective. They each created a spoon using their new ceramics skills (pinch pots and attaching). Spoons were fired and decorated with a glaze-like metallic paint. Visit the Grade 3-5 Celebration of Arts in May to see more of these creative spoons!

Welch Spoons
We also looked at the traditional Welch "Love Spoons".

Some students decided to give their spoons to people that they care about :)

Art ASA (Grade 3-5)

At GWA, every art class is a treat. Students are always enthusiastic and eager to come to class. I feel so lucky to teach such an amazing group of artists :) But seeing students who are so into art that they want to stay after a long day at school -now that's dedication!

During our first ASA class, we shared some goals and ideas about what they would like to do this term, and then we started with some drawing warm-ups.

We looked at a Malaysian artist, Cheeming Boey, who draws on cups. We talked about his art and the kind of drawings we might like to put on a cup. After creating our designs based on either real objects or imaginary ideas, we took out the sharpies and spent the rest of class working on our styrofoam cups. It was a little challenging in the beginning creating the lines we wanted on the soft cups, but after a little practise everyone looked like pros!

The Design Cycle

Grade 5 students are using the iPads in class this week to help them evaluate their collaborative art work. After viewing the contrast of their compositions, they went away to plan and make their designs better.

Grade 5 Monoprints

Grade 5 students are:
  • Exploring how line, shape and colour can be used to create emotions
  • Taking risks and trying new things
  • Identifying how small changes can effect an art work

The photos below show student’s monoprints and the facial expression shows the feeling they communicated in their art. Thank you 5NK for sharing your work!

Explorers in Art

Grade 5 Students are learning about how artists are explorers. In order to find new ideas and create unique art, as artists, we must be risk takers and explore new ways of doing things.
.
Creating abstract Paul Klee Mono prints is a great way to experience the design cycle as we

explore new ways of expressing ourselves and our emotions. Students are taking risks and solving problems as they try new ways of creating art. Mono prints allow the students to make many similar copies of their drawing, and experiment with the different effects.

Art does not reproduce the visible; rather, it makes visible. -Paul Klee

Reflections from Grade 5:

I was surprised that the pink mixed with the orange to make tertiary warm colours in my print! It works on my art because I wanted a calm and happy feeling.

I was pleased with the way the black mixed with the vibrant pink. It's ver intense.. I have been feeling very overwhelmed and a little crazy because I feel like everything in my home is changing these days!

I didnt like the way there was too much ink on the paper. It made my print look angry and  I wanted an excited feeling. I will try with less paint.
