Our Salt and Ice Colour Wheel

Grade 4 students were asked the question,
What will change when we put salt on ice?

We looked at one piece of ice without salt and another with salt.
This is what we found:
  • We heard a cracking sound.
  • The salt digs tunnels into the ice.
  • The salt dissolves.
  • The salt makes holes in the ice.

Next we added colour so that we could see what was happening more clearly:
  • We made secondary colours!
  • We made black when all of the colours mixed.

Student-Led Inquiry Time

Grade 5 students had some time today to find answers to some of the questions that they had generated as they explored the colour wheel. Here are a few of the new things they learned!

Is white a neutral colour? -Aidan
White, black and a range of greys are neutral colours!

How do you make black with paint? Elie

How is the colour wheel connected to colour in science (light)
You cant make white with paint but with light, all of the colours mixed make white!
-Jasper

I learned that Red and white = pink
black and white = grey
Green and Red =Brown:
- Laith

Who invented colour names? -Kevin
-no inventors credited

How is paint made?
Natural things that are that colour are ground, made into a pulp and chemicals are added. This becomes paint.

How can I make gold?
You can make gold by mixing brown and yellow with more yellow than brown mixed together.

Grade 5 Colour Challenge

Grade 5 students were introduced to the work of Wayne Thiebaud in art this week. They were then challenged to recreate the colours in Three Machines using only red, blue and yellow!

They learned about the primary, secondary and tertiary colours. A highlight was finding out that the 'paint' really was icing sugar and that the end of class collaborative project could be eaten!

Students were pleased with the results. One keen student even mixed a neutral colour very, very close to black! White was the only colour we didn't create.

Fun times in Grade 5!

Recreating 'Three Machines'

It was so much fun to see students guessing what the colours would make!

Students were challenged to mix new colours with the left over 'paint'. After sharing and naming the new colours, they discovered that mixing many colours made muddy colours. They learned that these are called neutrals. There were some very interesting names created for our new colours!
The pallets were a work of art too!
But eating the art was the most fun of all!

Grade 1 Colour Investigation

Grade one students started with just red, yellow and blue paint. Look at the many colours they created when they blew the paint through straws!

Can you find orange, green and purple?

Exploring Texture and Colour

This week in art class, Grade 3 students are investigating a new element of art: texture. I loved hearing the squeals of delight as students discovered yet another way to make interesting textures on their ball of plasticine. In our next art class we will be looking at the art of Barbara Reid and creating our own plasticine art. Look at the link below. If you like, you can watch her videos and try making plasticine art yourself at home. You can purchase plasticine at most grocery stores and book stores.  Visit the link below.

Before beginning our Barbara Reid art this week, We mixed red, yellow and blue plasticine to see what colours we could make. We learned that PRIMARY colours mix to make SECONDARY colours... and we learned about new element of art: Colour!
  • yellow and blue made green
  • red and yellow made orange
  • red and blue made purple

Cezanne Inspired Still Life

Grade 5 students have chosen objects from our local culture for their still life and carefully moved their objects around until they had just the right composition.  They are now finally ready to apply their newly learned colour theory to their paintings! Check out Wallwisher below to hear about how their projects are going! (Grade 5 students will be posting this week.) Pictures soon!

The students improved Ms Murphy's composition!
Beginning to paint!Black lines give EMPHASIS to the painting.

Finishing Up this Week! We have some very proud students.

Recreating The Colourwheel Homework

What creativity and enthusiasm in the art room this week as Grade 5 students proudly present their assignments! Take a peek below at the boards in the Grade 4 and Grade 5 halls as they fill up this week. There are many more to come!

Here, students are using the concentric circles model to share their homework with peers. They were asked to:
1.     Identify the primary, secondary and tertiary colours.
2.     Share your inspiration and creative idea.
3.     Explain how you organized the colours on your project or mixed them.

Colour Theory

After all of the fun we had last week mixing our Thiebaud inspired icing colour wheels, we had some theory to learn! Students learned how to name all of the tertiary colours and they also looked at how artiusts use warm and cool colour schemes. Grade 5 students went away to create ATCs that showed warm and cool colour combinations. Pictures soon!

Grade 5 students, be sure to complete your Homework this week. Check in the homework section for details!

Our bulletin board is acting as a table while we learn to name the colours. Later, we will transform it into a piece of art!
