Dubai Cityscapes Continued....

Grade 3 Cityscapes are looking brilliant!

Students are considering their use of warm and cool colours.
They are learning how to use a chalk pastel effectively and learning how to blend.

As a part of the city, all students were asked to draw a mosque with a dome roof and crescent (from Dubai now or the future). This has lead to many interesting conversations about the Muslim religon. Our class experts have been teaching us about prayer times, what the crescent means and about special holidays.

Blend like this :)

Modigliani Inspired Portraits

Grade 4 compared the proper dimensions of a face with those in Modigliani's portraits. Then, they completed these chalk self-portraits. Some of the characteristics they noted were:
  • long faces
  • almond eyes high on the head
  • pursed lips
  • sad, lifeless colours (students decided they wanted to put a splash of colour in their work though! Nice choice, I think!)
  • long necks
  • narrow shoulders

Still Life with Grade 3

I have been anxious to do this project for months and I was so happy to see that the students loved it as much as I did! We started with a warm-up contour drawing of a house plant. Grade 3 is becoming so skilled at finding the details in objects -inside and outside art class.

We then imagined our plant as if it was sitting on on the large sheet of black paper. We would have to draw it so that it filled in most of the space on our paper. Students then carefully followed the lines of the leaves and flowers until they had a beautiful line drawing. Sometimes we added extra leaves or flowers to balance our composition.

Next came the exciting part. We had to trace our lines with glue! Yes... glue. It took some practise to hold the bottle so that we got just the kind of line we wanted. Once the papers were covered with beautiful white flowers, we put them aside to dry. The glue will transform into shiny black lines, the perfect base for our chalk pastels next week! Stay tuned. They will be worth the wait.

 WEEK TWO:
And here we are working on the chalk...

A final piece: Alice requested that I post her picture as a special gift to her grandma, who has been visiting her in Dubai. I love how you blended the colours Alice!

The 10 minute Picture

In a very short class this Thursday, before an early Thursday dismissal, Grade 3LW students showed what they do in less than 10 minutes with chalk pastels and some imagination! Look at the beautiful work!

Leapin' Lizards

In this fun lesson, ASA students drew an animal that we often find in the desert and in our backyards. Here are our lizards, drawn with oil pastel and coloured with chalk pastels.

Landscapes of Dubai

Grade examined the lines and shapes in the Urban landscape of Dubai. We have been completing sketches and drawings in a variety of mediums such as pencil, oil and chalk pastel and marker. Below are some of our interpretations of what we think Dubai will look like in 5 years!
