Assessing Growth in Drawing
How can I draw what I see?
At the beginning of the year, each student at GWA from Grades KG2-Grade 5 was asked to do their best drawing in 10 minutes. They had to draw a of a pot of art supplies. They reflected on their work and set goals for how they would improve in drawing this year.
Here are some of the drawings and reflections from Grade 3:
- Look for Contour Families: line, curve, angle, circle and dot.
- Air draw
- 'Imagine draw' when you need to overlap
- Look closely... even when you think you're done!

smART centers
We all know that art is fun, but don't forget.... it makes us smarter as well! Grade 2 is being introduced to our new smART centers in class during this cycle. Students will alternate between small group instruction with the teacher and more self-directed independent art centers. This will allow for students to be provided with differentiated lessons based on interest or skill and the freedom to practise skills or explore interests during smART centres!
During this cycle, students who worked with the teacher learned about how to use the observational drawing center. I am very proud of the progress that they are making so quickly in their drawing! Here are a few reflections from Grade 2KR:
I thought that painting was the most fun, but when I learned to draw, I thought hat that was really fun too! I learned to do sketching so it looks real! -Miral
I thought that drawing was really boring, but now that I learned, I think it's really fun! -Ahlam
Before I like dpainting more, But now I like drawing too. I had fun doing it! Art makes you feel good! -Amin

WELCOME BACK!!!
It's been a wonderful summer, I'm sure you'll all agree, but isn't it great to be back! It's so good to see so many new and returning students getting excited about creating art. We've been getting to know each other in class and focusing on our essential agreement: RESPECT.
During the first cycle, students have been getting to know the Art room and how to respect materials by working together on a scavenger hunt. It's been fun watching students collaborate, solve problems and be thinkers as they figure out where all of the materials can be found in the art room!

Grade 3-5 Homework
As Grade 3,4 and 5 students finish up this week, they have been told that their homework is to draw, draw and draw, over the next 10 weeks and summer break! Here, 3KR is doing a practice contour drawing. They are getting much better at using thin and thick lines!
Remember:
-Look for dots, circles, straight lines, curved lines and angles!
-Draw slowly. Your pencil should move over the paper as your eye moves over the object.
And have fun!
To become good at drawing you must practice!
