After viewing some of Miro's art this week, Grade three classes were very excited to discover an artist that was so fun and intriguing! They loved that he used many kinds of geometric and organic shapes and many kinds of lines in his work. They noticed many other things about his work too. We did a visible thinking routine, See, Think, Wonder when we viewed The Garden. Below is an animated version of the original painting and some of the students thoughts:
- Black lines that make the bird stand out.' -They learned that it's called emphasis when an artist makes something stand out.
- 'I see some of the shapes and colours in The Garden repeated' -This made their eyes look all around the painting. They decided that they would use repetition in their work too.
- 'I see overlapping shapes.' -They were fun to make. Each time two shapes overlapped, they made a new one.
- 'I wonder why he paints like this.' - Students thought he might have done this painting when he was just very young because they had learned that he was 7 when he started making art. They were surprised to find out that he was an adult when he painted it. Students loved how all of his paintings made them so curious. They had many ideas about what the symbols might mean!
