Sculpture!
Grade 2 students are working on sculptures. They had an opportunity to experiment with clay when they built 3D buildings in their classroom Math and Inquiry lessons. This week in visual arts class, students decided that they would like to know how to make things stick together better.
The first thing students made was a pinch pot. We tried to make sure the sides of the pot were even and kept the clay moist so it didn't crack. Next we learned how to join two pieces of clay. We scored the clay to create a greater surface area and used slip to 'glue' it together.
Finally, it was time for a creative challenge! Students were asked to transform their pinch pot into a creature. They could add any number of appendages, tails, eyes, horns, teeth... as long as they kept the pinch pot in their design and used proper techniques to join pieces of clay.
